Dunkirk Bumped Out of First Place in the Box Office

Three weeks after its release, Christopher Nolan’s World War II epic, Dunkirk has hit an estimated $17.6 million in the box office. Even though it’s off to a slow start, Sony’s The Dark Tower debut as no.1 with an estimated $19.5 million in the U.S. and Canada.

The Dark Tower is based on Stephen King’s 8 book series. While Sony and Media Rights Capital made the movie with a relatively small budget of $60 million, its sluggish start is worrisome as it is just an opener for an extensive film franchise.

Even though it bumped Dunkirk out of 1st place, it seems that stars Idris Elba, Matthew McConaughey and Tom Taylor weren’t enough to get the critics to like the movie, as most said that at best it was generic and dull, while some added that it was simply a disaster.

Coming in third after Dunkirk is Sony’s animated The Emoji Movie with an estimated $12.4 million.
