HBO renews John Oliver’s “Last Week Tonight” for 3 more seasons

HBO has picked up three additional seasons of John Oliver’s weekly late-night show, Last Week Tonight. This means that Oliver is good to go for a total of 90 shows, which keeps him on the air though 2020. In other words, plenty more insightful deep-dive moments into everything that’s wrong for fans to enjoy

“We are thrilled to have John Oliver as an integral part of the HBO family and to continue to share his comedic brilliance with the world,” said HBO entertainment president Casey Bloys in a statement. “His extraordinary genius for rich and intelligent commentary is second to none.”

To which Oliver replied: “First: I firmly disagree with everything Casey just said. Second: We’re very grateful to Richard Plepler, Casey and everyone at HBO for letting us continue to do whatever it is we actually do. And finally: We’d also like to thank our staff for all their hard work. We’re incredibly proud of all of you, and rather than tell you that to your face, we’d like to do it in the cold, dispassionate form of a press release.”

As far as Emmy nominations as a measure of success, Last Week Tonight is currently up for 8 Emmy nominations, including Outstanding Variety Talk Series, a category that was ruled by The Daily Show with John Stewart and The Colbert Report for many years. The show has just also won 2 Creative Arts Emmy awards including Outstanding Interactive Program and Outstanding Picture editing.
