The first ever Tour de France happened in 1903 and it was announced on this very day. It was sponsored and organized by the magazine L’Auto and it ran from 1 – 19 July. Maurice Garin won.
The whole purpose of the race was to increase the popularity of L’Auto.
114 years later, the tradition still didn’t break.
