The 72nd annual Tony Awards celebrated the best of Broadway’s 2017-2018 season on Sunday night. The event was broadcasted live from Radio City Music Hall in New York City.
Hosts Josh Groban and Sara Bareilles kicked things off with a piano duet in which they joked at the fact that neither of them has won Tony or Grammy awards.
Hollywood big celebrities and theatre A-listers have come together to the star-studded show. SpongeBob SquarePants: The Broadway Musical and Mean Girls lead the nominations with 12 each.
Andrew Garfield, who won the first award of the night for his performance in Angels in America, gave a heartwarming speech with a reference to a recent Supreme Court decision relating to a Colorado baker who declined to bake a cake for a same-sex wedding, CNN reports. “We are all sacred and we all belong,” Garfield shared. “So, let’s just bake a cake for everyone who wants a cake to be baked.”
Bruce Springsteen won a special Tony Award for his sold-out Broadway show, “Springsteen on Broadway.” He performed “My Hometown” later in the night.
