Raye came into this year’s BRIT Awards with a record seven nominations, and she managed to make history again on Saturday night. The “Escapism” singer collected six trophies at London’s The O2 Arena, making history as the most decorated artist in a single year.
Raye’s debut album My 21st Century Blues was named the British album of the year, beating tough competition in The Ballad of Darren by Blur, Beautiful and Brutal Yard by J Hus, No Thank You by Little Simz, and Heavy Heavy by Young Fathers.
Raye was also named the British artist of the year, defeating the likes of Dua Lipa, Jessie Ware, and Fred Again. Her viral hit “Escapism” ft. 070 Shake won the award for song of the year, prevailing against such hits as Dua Lipa’s “Dance the Night”, PinkPantheress’ “Boy’s a Liar”, and “Miracle” by Calvin Harris and Ellie Goulding.
Raye also won awards for best R&B act, best new artist, and songwriter of the year. She was visibly emotional during her acceptance speech after becoming the artist with the most BRIT Awards wins in a single year.
“You just don’t understand what this means to me… I’m so proud of this album. I’m in love with music. All I ever wanted to be was an artist and now I’m an artist with an album of the year,” said Raye.
