We can always count on Saturn Awards to celebrate the fan-favorite genres often overlooked at other major award shows, and they did it once again on Sunday night. Avatar: The Way of Water led the way in the movie field, while Star Trek: Picard dominated the TV categories.
Avatar: The Way of Water entered the night with 12 nominations, and it managed to live up to the hype. It came victorious in four categories – the best science fiction film, best film direction, best film writing, and best film visual effects.
Barbie, Oppenheimer, and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny were right behind with three wins each. The list of major winners also includes Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (best superhero film), Talk to Me (best horror), and Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning 1 (best action/adventure film).
Star Trek: Picard was the biggest winner of the night on the TV side, with a total of four wins. In addition to being named the best science fiction television series, its stars Patrick Stewart, Jonathan Frakes, and Jeri Ryan collected awards in their respective acting categories.
The list of winners with multiple awards also included Wednesday, which was named the best fantasy television series, and Outlander, which collected the trophy for the best action/adventure/thriller television series.
