Aaron Sorkin to Direct “The Trial of the Chicago 7”

The Trial of the Chicago 7 has just been kicked into high gear. 

Aaron Sorkin has been tapped to direct the dramatic account based on real events. 

The political drama has been trying to get off the ground for years now. Steven Spielberg was Originally attached to direct from a script penned by Sorkin. However, following a writers’ strike Spielberg pulled out of the project. In 2013 he tried to get the project off the ground again but due to budgetary disagreements, it fell through again. 

The Trial of the Chicago 7, based on Brett Morgan documentary Chicago 10 is will tell the story of the 1969 trail in which seven anti-war activists were accused by the federal government of conspiracy following the 1968 protests in Chicago at the Democratic National Convention.

Variety reports that Sacha Baron Cohen in talks to star. Cohen is in early talks to play activist Abbie Hoffman, the anarchic co-founder of the Youth International Party, who became known as Yippies. The outlet also reports that Sorkin is looking to cast a stellar cast. 

Sorkin’s latest project was his Broadway adaptation of To Kill A Mockingbird set to debut in December.
