American Born Chinese gave us one truly amazing season, but its first chapter will also be its last. Disney+ kicked off the New Year by announcing this action fantasy series won’t be returning for another ride.

Based on Gene Luen Yang’s graphic novel American Born Chinese, this series centered on American teen Jin Wang, whose life turns upside down when he meets a foreign student Sun Wei-Chen – who just happens to be the son of the legendary Chinese god Monkey King.

Ben Wang and Jimmy Liu lead the show’s star-studded cast, which also included Oscar winners Ke Huy Quan and Michelle Yeoh. Yeo Yann Yann, Chin Han, Sydney Taylor, and Daniel Wu joined them in supporting roles, but the show also included many notable guest stars, such as Stephanie Hsu, Jimmy O. Yang, and Poppy Liu.

The cancelation of this series comes seven months after it premiered on Disney+ in late May, and shortly after the options on the cast expired. The 20th Television is planning to shop the series elsewhere, but finding a new home will be quite a struggle since this series never broke into the weekly Nielsen Top 10 streaming rankings, so the viewership numbers were probably on the lower side.
