It’s been a while since Anna Kendrick joined the true crime thriller The Dating Game in the lead role, but that won’t be the only responsibility she’ll have on the set of this movie. The Oscar-nominated actress will also make her directorial debut with this promising project.

Based on a Black List script by Ian MacAllister McDonald, this film draws inspiration from one of the most mind-blowing plot twists from the popular matchmaking TV show The Dating Game. Contestant Cheryl Bradshaw thought she found the love of her life in the funny and charming Rodney Alcala, until it turned out he was secretly a serial killer.

Kendrick said she decided to jump on board as a director because she felt connected to the story, the tone, and the themes around gender and intimacy that this film explores.

“I’ve loved this script from the moment I read it… The support I’ve received already from Stuart Ford and everyone at AGC, Vertigo, and BoulderLight has been inspiring and empowering,” said the Pitch Perfect star in an official statement.

Stuart Ford’s AGC Studios is fully funding and co-producing the project, with Kendrick serving as one of the producers. He said it makes absolute sense for her to step behind the camera because she has an innate feeling for the characters and the tone of the film.
