Box Office: “Captain Marvel” Hauls a $155M-Plus Debut

The first Marvel film to star a female superhero is kicking the box office’s ass!

Captain Marvel is doing much better than the projections, taking an estimated $156 million from 4,310 North American locations its opening weekend. This means that the latest Disney-Marvel installment has been catapulted to the top of the US box office followed by a series of holdovers that fill out the remaining four slots.

Should the film continue on this trajectory, it is expected to rank as the 7th best MCU domestic opening, behind the three Avengers movies, Black Panther, Iron Man 3 and Captain America: Civil War.

Captain Marvel stars Brie Larson as Vers, a Kree warrior with a murky past who discovers her history is not quite what she had always believed. It also stars Samuel L. Jackson, Ben Mendelsohn, Lashana Lynch, Jude Law, Annette Bening, Clark Gregg, and Gemma Chan.

The film was directed and written by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck.
