A Buffy the Vampire Slayer Reboot Is Officially Happening

It’s time to get out your stakes (again!).

ET confirms that a Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot is officially in development. This time around, however, stepping into the lead of high schooler and slayer, made famous by Sarah Michelle Geller will be a black actress. The lead role has yet to be cast.

Creator of the original series which ran from 1997 to 2003, Joss Whedon is on board as executive producer. Penning the script of the pilot is writer Monica Owusu-Breen.

Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that the reboot will be set in present day and build upon the mythology of the original series. The original followed high schooler Buffy Summers as she slayed vampires with help from friends Willow Rosenberg (Alyson Hannigan) and Xander Harris (Nicholas Brendon).

“I think if you look in our library, Buffy is probably the most ripe show we have for bringing back,” Fox’s Gary Newman said in March. “It’s something we talk about frequently, and Joss Whedon is really one of the greatest creators we ever worked with. When Joss decides it’s time, we’ll do it. And until Joss decides it’s time, it won’t happen.”

Looks like he’s finally decided it’s time to bring to slayer back!
