Burger King to Halt Sales of Abused Chicken Products

Burger King announced that it plans to stop buying chickens from farms that grossly mistreat them.

In hopes of reducing the suffering of millions of chickens, the company plans to purchase only chickens raised with standards of welfare and safety as directed by by Global Animal Partnership, an animal advocacy group. The move is scheduled to be completed by 2024.

“Chickens raised for meat, also known as ‘broilers,’ are among the most abused animals on the planet,” GAP said in a joint statement.

Another guideline to be enforced is the requirement that the chickens be fully unconscious before they’re slaughtered to minimize unneeded suffering.

Burger King will reportedly use third-party inspectors to guarantee its suppliers conform with the GAP standards. Similar pledges have been made in recent years by other nation-wide food chains, including Chipotle, Red Robin, Quiznos, & Starbucks.
