SAG-AFTRA sent an official statement to its 160,000 members on November 9, saying they’re thrilled and proud to announce that the TV/Theatrical Negotiating Committee voted unanimously to approve a tentative agreement with the AMPTP.

The new deal is valued at over one billion dollars over the course of the next three years, and SAG-AFTRA is hoping it will help its members build sustainable careers.

“We have achieved a deal of extraordinary scope that includes ‘above-pattern’ minimum compensation increases, unprecedented provisions for consent and compensation that will protect members from the threat of AI, and for the first time establishes a streaming participation bonus,” reads the organization’s statement.

The new contract also promises a pension and health cap raise, compensation increases for background performers, and critical contract provisions protecting diverse communities. The deal will only go into full effect after it’s been reviewed by the SAG-AFTRA National Board, and the actors will be able to go back to work once the ratification vote is completed.

A new solo Willow series is spinning out of BOOM! Studios’ Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Willow will follow the titular character as she travels the world looking to find herself in the wake of recent events, even as she struggles to come to terms with the darkness that might be inside her, and becomes aware of another threat that might be more than even the Scooby Gang could handle — except, of course, this time, Willow is out there all alone.

The series will be penned by Mariko Tamaki, with art by Natacha Bustos. 

Boom! Executive Editor Jeanine Schaefer said in a statement, “Since we first started building our corner of the Buffyverse, we’ve been excited to give Willow her own miniseries—partly because she’s an absolute favorite of ours, but also because she is one of the most iconic queer characters in pop culture.”

Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Willow will debut in June.

The annual fundraiser was set to take place on May 4. This year’s theme was “About Time: Fashion and Duration.”

“The Museum will remain closed through Saturday, April 4. Additionally, the CDC advised over the weekend that there should not be any gatherings of 50 people or more for the next eight weeks. In deference to this guidance, all programs and events through May 15 will be canceled or postponed,” a museum spokesperson said in a statement.

“One day that will not arrive on schedule will be the opening of the Costume Institute’s exhibition, About Time,” Vogue editor-in-chief and gala co-chair Anna Wintour said in a statement. “Due to the unavoidable and responsible decision by the Metropolitan Museum to close its doors, About Time, and the opening night gala, will not take place on the date scheduled. In the meantime, we will give you a preview of this extraordinary exhibition in our forthcoming May issue.”

Multiple outlets confirm that The Karate Kid is being developed for the stage

Original screenwriter Robert Mark Kamen who’s adapting the film said in a statement: “On June 13, 1982, my daughter Alessandra (Ali with an i) was born. Two days later, when she arrived home from the hospital, I sat down with her in one of those little rocking cradles at my side and began to write The Karate Kid. A year later, in October of 1983, principal photography began. A year after that, in June of 1984, exactly two years after I wrote the script, the film was in theaters. And there it stayed for nearly six months. Five sequels and two television shows later, amazingly the characters and the story still resonates with audiences the way it did when the film first was released. Never in my wildest dreams did I think this little movie would reach across generations the way it has. And beyond my wildest dreams did I think what started out as a love letter to my devotion to Okinawan Karate and the man who taught me would become a full-blown Broadway musical. But here it is. Here I am. And here is hoping that what comes to the stage brings the same joy and relevance The Karate Kid has brought to countless kids and their parents for the past 35 years. Go figure.”

Kamen is penning the book. Drew Gasparini is set to write the music and lyrics. Director Amon Miyamoto is set to helm the project with Keone and Mari Madrid set to serve as choreographers.

Sources tell Deadline that Netflix is ready to pay big money to tie-up prominent British writing talent, Golden Globe and BAFTA-winner Morgan obviously included. The outlet further reports that the deal is valued well into the eight figures. “The figure is beyond insane,” said someone with knowledge of the mega overall deal. 

The deal with Morgan is the latest in Netflix’s efforts to exclusively bank formidable talent. He joins these producers who’ve inked overall deals with the streamer — Shonda Rhimes, Ryan Murphy, Kenya Barris, Jenji Kohan, and the Obamas, among others.

The Oscar-winning director teamed up with Amazon’s Original Stories imprint. The imprint also confirmed in its announcement that the still-untitled collection will be available as Kindle ebook and an Audible audiobook sometime in 2021.

“Throughout the years, I’ve been inspired by reading short stories, from ghost stories to fairy tales. Now I have the privilege to create and share my own,” said the director of Pan’s Labyrinth and The Shape of Water in a statement.

Also publishing via the imprint is Mindy Kaling who is set to release a collection of essays in summer 2020.

Two of the NBC comedy stars, Jenna Fischer and Angela Kinsey, are working on a new project that will bring The Office back into our lives. 

The podcast, called Office Ladies, will see the two break down an episode of The Office each episode, share behind-the-scenes stories, and answer questions from fans.

“I’m excited to be working with my best friend Angela Kinsey,” Fischer said in a statement. “So many memories are flooding in as we go back and watch the episodes – many of which I haven’t seen since they aired. The 58-year-old Drag Queen broke the news at RuPaul’s DragCon NYC on Saturday confirming that he’s launching a RuPaul’s Drag Race residency at the Flamingo Las Vegas.

According to the press release, the show titled RuPaul’s Drag Race Live! will be “packed with outrageous comedy, eye-popping fashions, over-the-top singing and dancing, heartwarming moments, plus twists and turns that will leave the audience gagging for more.”

“RuPaul’s Drag Race Live! is an immersive, interactive thrill-ride for everyone who loves to laugh, dance and sing-along when a fabulous drag queen shakes her padded a** on stage,” RuPaul said.

The show’s producers, Randy Barbato and Fenton Bailey, added: “The RuPaul’s Drag Race Live! Las Vegas residency show will immerse audiences in that experience in the most interactive way possible. With original music, world-class performances by America’s favorite queens, and all of the self-awareness and attitude of the television show, RuPaul’s Drag Race Live! will leave audiences wanting more!”

The former Beatle is ticking off another first — writing a musical adaptation of Frank Capra’s 1946 film. The idea hailed from British theatre producer, Bill Kenwright, who acquired the rights to It’s A Wonderful Life and then approached McCartney — three years ago!

“Like many of these things, this all started with an email,” McCartney said. “Bill had asked if it was something I might be up for. Writing a musical is not something that had ever really appealed to me, but Bill and I met up with Lee Hall and had a chat and I found myself thinking this could be interesting and fun.”

According to the musician, the forthcoming adaptation will be “a universal story we can all relate to.” 

He’s been working with Billie Elliot scribe, Lee Hall, who said of the project, “It has absolutely everything: comedy, pathos and a rare humanity which has touched generation after generation. Yet it just couldn’t be more relevant. To give it a life on the stage is an immense privilege, but to do it with Paul McCartney is off the scale. Paul’s wit, emotional honesty, and melodic brilliance brings a whole new depth and breadth to the classic tale. I feel as if an angel must be looking after me.”

Production is set to launch in late 2020 in the UK before moving to Broadway.

According to multiple sources, the iconic magazine will shift to previously published material after the August issue.

“After issue #10 this fall there will no longer be new content — except for the end-of-year specials which will always be all new,” the magazine’s publisher DC said in a statement to ABC News. “So starting with issue #11 the magazine will feature classic, best-of and nostalgic content from the last 67 years.” The publication will continue to publish a year-end issue with new content and “MAD books and special collections,” according to DC.

Those affiliated with the publication, now and in the past, took to social media to lament what seems to be the end of the magazine.

“I am profoundly sad to hear that after 67 years, MAD Magazine is ceasing publication,” wrote Al Yankovic on Twitter. “I can’t begin to describe the impact it had on me as a young kid – it’s pretty much the reason I turned out weird. Goodbye to one of the all-time greatest American institutions. #ThanksMAD.”

Cartoonist Judd Winick added, “MAD MAGAZINE is one of the biggest reasons why I became a cartoonist. It was a staple. A constant. It was funny. Brilliant. Stupid. And was almost exclusively loaded with great art. It’s ending, and this is the end of an era. @MADmagazine.”
