Chrissy Metz drops hints about Toby’s depression in season 3

This Is Us star Chrissy Metz opens up about third season’s teaser.

After fans finally got to see Kate and Toby’s wedding in the season 2 finale, season 3 flashforwards showed fans that the forthcoming season is still full of hardships for the Pearsons.

The peek into the newlyweds’ future peek showed Toby (Chris Sullivan) in bed, battling depression and concerned Kate by his side.

This Is Us executive producer Elizabeth Berger revealed in an interview to EW that Toby and Kate’s wish to expand their family “isn’t going to go away. So that, along with other stresses that come with the first year of marriage will definitely be at play” in season 3.

Metz also revealed that the show will explore Toby’s depression “on a much deeper level.”

“It’s important to note that in relationships, there’s always somebody that might be a little stronger at one time, and then that dynamic switches,” Metz said. “He’s helped Kate get through so much of her stuff that she’s really ready to show up for him, and while it might be difficult, it’s going to be necessary because they’re going to contend with some hardships… They’ve come through so much together that they’re strong and they’re honest with one another. But it doesn’t mean there aren’t challenges and they don’t need each other to help each other out.”

This Is Us returns for season 3 in the fall on NBC.
