“Dark Phoenix” Crashes in the Box Office

The superhero film fails to catch fire.

Marvel’s latest installment of its X-Men franchise did not do well its opening weekend at the North American box office.

Despite being a low-earning nationwide box office, the film still didn’t manage to come out on top, opening to an estimated $33 million – the lowest ever opening for a film in the franchise. It was beaten out by the animated The Secret Life of Pets 2 that collected $47.1 million.

The Simon Kinberg-helmed feature starring Sophie Turner, James McAvoy, and Michael Fassbender, did do a bit better at the international box office with $107 million. The follow-up to 2016’s pet-centered pic came in second with $16 million globally.

Box office holdovers round out the top three with Disney’s live-action Aladdin, hauling an estimated $24.5 million in its third weekend.
