The Matrix is one of the defining sci-fi franchises of the 21st century, and its future is looking bright. The Oscar-nominated screenwriter Drew Goddard joined forces with Warner Bros for the fifth installment of The Matrix, executive produced by the original director Lana Wachowski.

Jesse Ehrman, Warner Bros Motion Pictures’ president of production, said this project came together after Goddard approached the studio with an incredible way to continue the Matrix story, offering a unique perspective based on his own love of the series and characters.

“The entire team at Warner Bros. Discovery is thrilled for Drew to be making this new ‘Matrix’ film, adding his vision to the cinematic canon the Wachowskis’ spent a quarter of a century building here at the studio,” said Ehrman in a statement.

The Matrix 5 will be the first Matrix film not directed by Lana Wachowski, but the original co-writer and co-creator will still be involved as an executive producer. She was the sole director of the latest film in the franchise, The Matrix Resurrections from 2021, which she co-wrote with David Mitchell and Aleksandar Hemon.

Warner Bros is keeping plot details under wraps, and it’s unclear if the OG cast members Keanu Reeves, Carrie Anne-Moss, and Laurence Fishburne would return in their respective roles.
