Elton John has won more accolades than we can count, and his latest helped him enter the door of the coveted EGOT club. The iconic British singer finally became the EGOT winner, after collecting his first Emmy Award for Elton John Live: Farewell from Dodger Stadium
John’s Disney+ special won the award for outstanding variety special at the Primetime Emmys on Monday night, beating the likes of the most recent Oscars and Tony Awards shows, Rihanna’s Super Bowl LVII Halftime Show, and Chris Rock: Selective Outrage.
This victory finally helped John win one award that had been eluding him for years and officially become the EGOT winner. He’s also the recipient of five Grammy awards, two best original song Oscars for “Can You Feel the Love Tonight” from The Lion King and “(I’m Gonna) Love Me Again” from Rocketman, and one Tony for the best original score for Aida.
John wasn’t present at the ceremony, but he acknowledged this historic honor in an official statement.
“I am incredibly humbled to be joining the unbelievably talented group of EGOT winners tonight. The journey to this moment has been filled with passion, dedication, and the unwavering support of my fans all around the world,” said John in a press release.
