“Fifty Shades Freed” makes $137M worldwide in opening weekend

This past weekend the new Fifty Shades Freed film grossed over $137 million worldwide during the opening box office weekend.

Across the United States, the film was placed in the number one spot at the box office and grossed over $38 million. Internationally, Fifty Shades Freed grossed over $98 million. According to The Hollywood Reporter,this has been the top opening of the year for a film. Fifty Shades Freed beat Peter Rabbit, and Clint Eastwood’s The 15:17 to Paris.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Universal’s president, Jim Orr, notes that “We take great pride providing films for distinct audiences.” He adds that “We played evenly across America and over-indexed in a lot of Midwestern markets where you wouldn’t think an R-rated, adult title wouldn’t play.”

Fifty Shades Freed is directed by James Foley and stars Dakota Johnson as Anastasia Steele and Jamie Dornan as Christian Grey.The film focuses on the life of the newlywed couple and the challenges they must face together.
