HBO is plotting several spin-offs of their hit show Game of Thrones, and it turns out some of them will be animated. George R.R. Martin recently shared an update with fans on his blog and revealed he’s plotting three animated spin-offs with HBO, starting with Nine Voyages.

Martin marked the end of 2023 by telling fans what he’s been up to recently in a lengthy blog post and dropped several hints about the future of the Game of Thrones franchise. He revealed there are three animated projects underway, but added none of them have been greenlit yet.

Nine Voyages, which centers on the adventures of Corlys Velaryon, is one of those projects because “budgetary constraints would likely have made a live-action version prohibitively expensive”, according to Martin.

“We have moved Nine Voyages, our series about the legendary voyages of the Sea Snake, over from live-action to animation. A move I support fully… There’s a whole world out there.  And we have a lot better chance of showing it all with animation,” he wrote on his blog.

Game of Thrones produced one spin-off so far – the live-action prequel House of the Dragon, but Martin dropped hints about several potential spin-offs over the years, including Flea Bottom and 10,000 Ships.
