“Grease” Prequel Titled “Summer Loving” in Development

“Summer Nights”, the iconic opener of hit musical Grease, gave us a glimpse into the short fling between Danny Zuko and Sandy Olsson – and they’ll soon tell us more. A prequel called Summer Loving will focus on everything that went on between these star-crossed lovers before we met them in Grease.

Paramount hired Big Fish writer John August to pen the script, based on the 1978 classic, starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John. The catchy tune, that served as inspiration for the prequel, makes it very clear that Danny and Sandy have much different recollection of their summer fling, so it will be pretty fun to see how things really played out.

Summer Loving won’t be the first spin-off of this smash hit, which managed to earn $395 million over four decades. This beloved musical also spawned a sequel, Grease 2, starring Maxwell Caulfield and Michelle Pfeiffer, but it was critical and box office bomb.

Despite its failure to bring the franchise to new heights, the original Grease proved to be one of Paramount’s most timeless hits of all time. It secured a place in pop culture thanks to its catchy songs, and we’re hoping Summer Loving will do the same.
