“Groundhog Day” Sequel in the Works – Sort of

Bill Murray and Andie MacDowell in "Groundhog Day"

Groundhog Day is getting a sequel — but a virtual reality game!

Variety confirms that a VR game is being developed by Tequila Works in partnership with Sony Pictures Virtual Reality.

The classic comedy is coming back as Groundhog Day: Like Father Like Son is a “virtual reality adventure game.” The original 1993 film starred Bill Murray as Phil Connors, a weatherman who’s trapped in an endless loop as he relived the same day over and over again.

The outlet reports that the game will drop players into a reoccurring day in the life of Phil Connors Jr., son of Phil Connors.

“We are not developing a new ‘Groundhog Day’ movie,” Jake Zim, senior vice president of the Sony Pictures VR group, told Variety. “This is us expanding the storyline into a new format. We’ve taken Groundhog Day and put it into a musical, now we’re putting it into an immersive experience.

Groundhog Day is a real attempt to make a real game,” he added.
