“Hair Live!” Cancelled by NBC

The Hair Live! musical has been canceled by NBC.

The iconic rock musical was pulled by the network and will not be getting a televised production after all.

The news was announced Monday by NBC. One of the reasoning behind the cancellation was that the network is looking to produce a musical that would appeal to a larger audience base and something less politically charged.

“Live musicals are a part of this network’s DNA and we are committed to continuing that tradition with the right show at the right time,” Paul Telegdy and George Cheeks, co-chairmen of NBC Entertainment, said in a statement.

“Since these shows are such enormous undertakings, we need titles that have a wide appeal and we’re in the process of acquiring the rights to a couple of new shows that we’re really excited about,” they added.

Outlets like Entertainment Tonight also reports that the reason for canceling Hair Live! was that it was scheduled to air on May 19, which means it would have been in direct competition with HBO’s series finale of Game of Thrones and the season finale of ABC’s American Idol.
