Season 4 of Barry is arriving on HBO this spring, but its return will be quite bittersweet for the show’s fans. Bill Hader confirmed that the acclaimed dark comedy will end its run with Season 4 after “a very clear ending presented itself.”

Barry set down with Variety to discuss what Season 4 has in store and confirmed it will be the last chapter of this story. Some of the viewers felt that the last season should serve as the show’s ending, but Hader explained they decided to film another season to address all the unanswered questions.

“What happens in Season 4 is structurally radical in some ways, but it made sense for what I think the characters needed to go through, and what I think the whole show is always kind of headed towards,” he told Variety.

In addition to playing the lead role and co-creating the show alongside Alec Berg, Hader also directed all the episodes of Season 4. The series also stars Henry Winkler, Stephen Root, Michael Irby, Anthony Carrigan, and Sarah Goldberg.

Barry premiered on HBO in 2018 to critical acclaim, and it went on to receive 44 Primetime Emmy Awards nominations, winning nine. Its fourth season will feature eight episodes, set to premiere on HBO on April 16.
