“Hidden Figures” Series in Development

The box-office hit movie Hidden Figures is being made into a series by Nat Geo.

While the project is still in early stages of development, Variety reports that the series will be inspired by the film, which was based on the book of the same name by Margot Lee Shetterly.

The 2016 film starred Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer, Janelle Monáe, Kevin Costner, Kirsten Dunst, and Jim Parsons. It told the true story of the black female mathematicians who were key figures in the early days of the American space program. The film turned out to be a huge success, landing three Academy Awards nominations including Best Picture.

Nat Geo is a joint venture between National Geographic and 21st Century Fox. This project is part of the cable network’s push to scripted content. It is currently set to debut the second season of its scripted series Genius.

Should the project go to series, it will we executive produced by Peter Chernin and Jenno Topping of Chernin Entertainment, both of whom served as executive producers on the film.
