Max von Sydow spent the last seven decades giving us one amazing performance after another, and he left a timeless legacy behind him when he passed away at the age of 90.

The actor’s widow, Catherine von Sydow, released an official statement saying, “It is with a broken heart and with infinite sadness that we have the extreme pain of announcing the departure of Max von Sydow, on March 8, 2020.”

Many of Hollywood’s biggest stars sent condolences to Von Sydow’s family, including the fellow acting legends Mia Farrow, Sam Neill, Michael McKean, and directors Kevin Smith and Edgar Wright, who remembered him fondly in their tweets.

Von Sydow broke into the scene with the role in The Seventh Seal, directed by his frequent collaborator Ingmar Bergman. The Swedish actor also found significant success in Hollywood with his roles in The Exorcist, Flash Gordon, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and Game of Thrones, and received two Oscar nominations for his performances in Pelle the Conqueror and Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close.
