“House of Cards” and “The Wire” actor Reg E. Cathey dies at 59

House of Cards and The Wire star Reg Cathey has dies at the age of 59.

The Wire creator, David Simon, took to Twitter on Sunday and shared the sad news.

“Reg Cathey, 1958-2018. Not only a fine, masterful actor — but simply one of the most delightful human beings with whom I ever shared some long days on set. On wit alone, he could double any man over and leave him thinking. Reg, your memory is a great blessing.

Born in Alabama, Cathey was educated at the Yale School of Drama. He had a long career filled with notable roles. His last memorable role was the portrayal of Freddie on House of Cards. The role earned him 3 Emmy nomination, taking the coveted award home in 2015 winning an Emmy for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series.

Cathey also took part in other memorable series including The Corner, Oz, The Wire, Outcast The Blacklist, The Good Wife and more.

Other colleagues and co-workers shared moving tributes to the late actor.

House of Cards creator tweeted, “Reg Cathey was one of a kind. Brimming with life force, generosity, humor, gravitas and a fountain of talent. Loved by everyone lucky enough know him and work with him. He will be greatly missed. Rest In Peace, Reg.” Samuel L. Jackson also shared his thoughts on social media writing, “Shattered at the loss of Reg E. Cathey! Brilliant actor, humorist & friend! Irreplaceable! The ancestors about to be challenged!!
