John Mayer Reveals His New Song Is About Katy Perry

It’s almost four years since John Mayer released his full-length album, Paradise Valley. Luckily for the fans, his new music material, The Search for Everything, will be out on April 14.

The 39-year-old singer revealed in an interview with the New York Times on Thursday, that his new single “Still Feel Like Your Man” is about Katy Perry. The former lovebirds dated on and off for about a year and a half until early 2014.

“Who else would I be thinking about?” he shared. “And by the way, it’s a testament to the fact that I have not dated a lot of people in the last five, six years. That was my only relationship. So it’s like, give me this, people.”

The song features lines such as “I still keep your shampoo in my shower / In case you wanna wash your hair  and “Still like the letters in your name and how they feel, babe / Still think I’m never gonna find another you / Still like to leave the party early and go home, babe / And don’t you know, babe / I’d rather sit here on my own and be alone, babe.”

“There were times when tears came out of me, and I went, OK, John, this is not about an on-again, off-again relationship. This is something more profound,” he said.

He also told The New York Times that since his breakup with Perry, he barely dated, though he uses an exclusive dating app from time to time, adding, “It’s just lot of chatter…we all talk to the same people. There are very few people actually meeting up.”

He also opened up about wanting to settle down and start a family.

“That’s the final frontier, man,” he shared. And with his 40th birthday coming up this October, he recognized that he may be celebrating as a single guy. “I wish there was somebody to throw me the 40th.”

“I want the baby with the protective earphones” [by the side of the stage],” he added.

He insisted that he’s not afraid to write vulnerable music about real events and it will always be him and only him who will write the material.

“My record has one name in the parentheses on every song, and it’s my name,” he said. “That’s important.”

Mayer’s remarks were posted almost a month after Perry and Bloom’s split.

The singer-songwriter is presumed to be the subject of the song “Dear John” by Taylor Swift, one of his exes, who is also famous for releasing heartbreak songs. The duo reportedly dated for quite a few months in 2009 when Taylor was 19. She never confirmed the subject of the song officially.

Mayer told Rolling Stone in 2012 that he felt “really humiliated” by her song, which he assumes is about him.

Swift responded through Glamour magazine, “How presumptuous! I never disclose who my songs are about.”
