Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, the NBA legend and activist, is set to produce Black Patriots with the History channel.

The documentary is about the African American experience during the Revolutionary War and it will tell the stories of Crispus Attucks, Peter Salem, Phillis Wheatley, and James Armistead Lafayette – influential African American leaders during that time.

Following his retirement from the NBA, Abdul-Jabbar has been writing books and articles to bring awareness to society of African Americans who impacted America. When talking about the documentary he said, “‘Black Patriots’ chronicles the surprising, crucial, and often ignored role the black people played in the creation of our country.”

He further said, “Here’s something we never learned in school: George Washington said that African-Americans were pivotal to winning the Revolutionary War. From soldiers to spies to poets, black people were as much the founders of America as those who signed the Declaration of Independence.”

Black Patriots premieres on Wednesday, February 19, 2020.
