Kevin Spacey Responds to Anthony Rapp’s Allegations and Comes Out as Gay

Following Anthony Rapp’s allegations that Kevin Spacey made an unwanted sexual advance on him when he was 14 years old, Spacey has issued a statement which served as an apology as well as a coming out statement.

In an interview with BuzzFeed the actor and Broadway star alleged that Spacey invited him to his Manhattan apartment for a party in 1986, eventually finding himself alone with the then 26-year-old Spacey.

Spacey’s statement came just hours after BuzzFeed published the interview. On Sunday night, Spacey responded to the allegations on Twitter.

“I have a lot of respect and admiration for Anthony Rapp as an actor. I’m beyond horrified to hear his story. I honestly do not remember the encounter, it would have been over 30 years ago. But if I did behave as he describes, I owe him the sincerest apology for what would have been deeply inappropriate drunken behavior, and I am sorry for the feelings he describes having carried with him all these years.”

The House of Cards star admitted that Rapp’s story in fact “encouraged [him] to address other things” in his life.

“As those closest to me know, in my life, I have had relationships with both men and women. I have loved and had romantic relationships with men throughout my life, and I choose now to live as a gay man.”

In a statement released to EW by the now 46-year-old Rapp after the BuzzFeed interview, Rapp said, “I came forward with my story, standing on the shoulders of the many courageous women and men who have been speaking out, to shine a light and hopefully make a difference, as they have done for me.”
