The Wedding Banquet put Ang Lee on the map three decades ago, and Andrew Ahn is working on its remake. The cast of the modern-day reimaging of Lee’s cult classic will be one star-studded affair after Lily Gladstone and Bowen Yang landed lead roles.
Unlike the original film, which centered on one couple, the new version of The Wedding Banquet will chronicle the complicated relationship between two pairs. Min’s relationship falls apart when his boyfriend Chris rejects his spontaneous marriage proposal so he turns to his friend Angela for help.
Angela agrees to marry Min after he accepts to pay for IVF treatments for her partner Liz in exchange for a green card. Everything’s going according to plan until Min’s grandmother makes a surprise trip from Seoul to throw them an extravagant Korean wedding banquet.
Bowen Yang (Saturday Night Live) and Lily Gladstone (Killers of the Flower Moon) will lead this project alongside Kelly Marie Tran (Star Wars), Yuh-jung Youn (The Last Emperor), and Joan Chen (Minari).
The Wedding Banquet came out in 1993 as Ang Lee’s second film as a director and a part of his Father Knows Best trilogy. It received an Oscar nomination for the best foreign-language film and won the Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival.
