Lily James and Armie Hammer Join “Rebecca” adaptation

Lily James and Armie Hammer are attached to plays the leads in the newest adaptation of Rebecca.

Based on the 1938 Daphne du Maurier novel, the story follows a newly married young woman who, upon arriving at her husband’s imposing family estate on the English coast, finds herself battling the shadow of his deceased first wife, Rebecca, who haunts the house.

According to Entertainment Weekly, James will star as the second Mrs. de Winter (her name is not revealed in the novel) and Hammer is onboard to portray Maxim de Winter, the novel’s Gothic hero.

Ben Wheatley is set to direct from a script by Jane Goldman (Kingsman).

The gothic thriller was first adapted in 1940 and starred Joan Fontaine and Laurence Olivier. The film was nominated for 11 Academy Awards and took home the Oscar for best picture. It also marked Alfred Hitchcock’s only Academy Award nomination.

The film is scheduled to go into production in the spring.
