Margot Robbie to Star in Live Action “Barbie” Movie

After a very long gestation, it looks like Barbie is closer to the big screen than ever before.

Entertainment Tonight reports that Margot Robbie is in talks to lead Barbie movie.

The project has been in the works for several years now, first announced in 2014. Back then funny woman Amy Schumer was attached to the project. However, after she exited due to scheduling conflicts, Anne Hathaway was attached to star. The film was originally slated for June 2018 but ultimately pushed back to May 2020.

Now that the I Tonya star has been tapped to star in the new feature film about the iconic doll, Warner Bros. is in final talks with Sony from the distribution rights. Robbie is also set to produce the film via her production company, Lucky Chaps.

According to ET, the first about the worldwide popular toy will put a feminist spin on the doll with an emphasis on body image and identity.

Robbie’s most recently starred as infamous figure skater Tonya Harding. You can see her next in Josie Rourke’s Mary Queen of Scots out December 7.
