Barbie is one of the most anticipated movies of 2023 and Greta Gerwig finally decided to give us a taste of things to come. The first teaser trailer shows Margot Robbie transforming into Barbie, and it does a great job of dropping hints about the movie without revealing any plot details.
The one-minute-long teaser evokes Stanley Kubrick’s classic 2001: A Space Odyssey from the first frame to the last and opens with a voice-over from Helen Mirren herself, saying, “Since the beginning of time, since the first little girl ever existed, there have been dolls. But the dolls were always and forever baby dolls. Until …”
Following these ominous words, the camera pans to a giant Barbie, replacing the monolith from Kubrick’s early-man sequence. The girls who were shown playing with baby dolls in earlier scenes, smash them in slow motion after being wowed by Barbie, who winks at the camera at the end of the trailer.
We then get to see several scenes from the movie itself that don’t reveal much of the movie’s plot but give us a look at Ryan Gosling, Issa Rae, and Simu Liu in character. The supporting cast also includes Ncuti Gatwa, America Ferrera, Emma Mackey, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Kate McKinnon, Will Ferrell, Michael Cera, and Hari Nef, among others.
Barbie will be released on July 21, 2023 by Warner Bros. Pictures.
