“Barbie” Movie Finds Writers in Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach

Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach have proven they’re a match made in heaven with Frances Ha and Mistress America, and they’re gearing up to work together on their first big-budget project – the Barbie movie starring Margot Robbie.

Gerwig and Baumbach will be in charge of co-writing the script for this exciting project. The Oscar-nominated filmmaker behind the critically acclaimed comedy Lady Bird is also in talks to direct the movie.

According to the official logline, this film will follow the adventures of the iconic doll, after she’s kicked out of Barbieland for not being perfect enough. She learns valuable lessons in the outside world and goes back to save Barbieland after realizing that beauty comes from within.

Margot Robbie is currently the only actress attached to the project. Robbie Brenner, the executive producer of Mattel Films, said it’s extremely important to them to make this movie as diverse as possible.

“For us, the Barbie movie should definitely have a message of female empowerment, and that you can dream and be anything you want. I do think it’s important to push the boundaries and push the limits. And I think people are really ready to see something different,” said Brenner during Fortune’s Brainstorm Tech conference.
