Melissa McCarthy in Talks to Voice Ursula in “The Little Mermaid” Live-Action Remake

Variety confirms that Melissa McCarthy is in talks to joins Disney’s live-action adaptation of The Little Mermaid.

According to the outlet, the 48-year-old actress is in negotiations to star as the iconic sea witch Ursula, however, the deal is not yet completed.

The contemporary re-imagining of the animated classic from Mary Poppins Returns’ helmer Rob Marshall will feature the songs from the original as well as new songs from original composer Alan Menken. Penning the script is David Magee.

Marshall said of the live-action remake, it’s about ”a woman finding her voice. A girl finding her voice, actually. And that immediately just felt like an interesting, timely piece that resonated with us.”

Disney’s latest live-action remake Aladdin grossed $820 million worldwide. The studio’s next live-action remake to hit theaters is the highly anticipated The Lion King, which will hit theaters July 19.
