Doctor Who fans are used to seeing Time Lord’s companions come and go, but Ruby Sunday’s time with the Doctor was surprisingly short-lived. Millie Gibson, who played the companion to Ncuti Gatwa’s Doctor, exited the hit sci-fi series after a single full season.

Whovians welcomed Gibson with open arms after she made her debut as Ruby Sunday in the 2023 Christmas special “The Church on Ruby Road” alongside Gatwa. She’s expected to return in the show’s upcoming fourteenth season, set to premiere in May, but this will also mark the last time she boards the Tardis.

Gibson won’t be around when Doctor Who returns for Season 15, and Mirror reports that showrunner Russell T Davies was the one who made this call. Ruby Sunday will conclude her journey with the Doctor by the time Season 14 wraps up and she’s not expected to be back for the 2024 Christmas special.

Davies already found a replacement for Gibson in the Andor actress Varada Sethu, who’s set to become Gatwa’s next companion in Season 15. A source close to the production discussed her casting with BBC and said that Davies was “just blown away by her talent”, adding that the cast and crew have really warmed to her.
