MTV To Rename “Moonman” Video Music Award as “Moon Person”

MTV president Chris McCarthy has revealed in an interview with The New York Times that the VMA trophy “Moonman” will now be called the “Moon Person,” in addition to getting rid of gendered categories at 2017 MTV Movie Awards and upcoming 2017 MTV Video Music Awards, E! News reports.

“Why should it be a man? It could be a man, it could be a woman, it could be transgender, it could be nonconformist,” McCarthy said.

Fans will be able to see the updated trophy at the 2017 MTV VMAs, with host Katy Perry, which will air live from The Forum in Inglewood, California, on Sunday August 27 at 8pm ET/PT.

McCarthy also told the New York Times that a revamped version of Total Request Live, will broadcast from a studio in Times Square. However original host Carson Daly will not return. Instead, viewers should expect a rotation of hosts.
