The Brothers Sun is one of the most acclaimed new shows to premiere on Netflix this winter, but positive reviews didn’t save it from a quick cancelation. The streaming giant axed the action comedy series starring Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh after a single season.

The Brothers Sun was created for Netflix by Brad Falchuk and Byron Wu, and it centers on Charles Sun (Justin Chien), who decides to leave his life as a Taipei gangster behind after an attempted assassination on his father and move to Los Angeles to take care of his mother (Michelle Yeoh) and younger brother Bruce (Sam Song Li).

In addition to the leading trio, this series also starred Joon Lee, Highdee Kuan, Alice Hewkin, Jenny Yang, Johnny Kou, Jon Xue Zhang, and Madison Hu.

Justin Chien described The Brothers Sun as a labor of love in an emotional post on social media and took a moment to thank everyone who made it possible.

“It will take some time to digest this news, but I want to thank you all from the bottom of my heart for your love and support for the show… Thank you to Netflix for giving our story a platform and giving me the opportunity to play a dream role,” wrote Chien on Instagram following the show’s cancelation.
