A new trailer for Ready Player One, Steven Spielberg’s big-screen adaptation of the popular novel by Ernest Cline, reveals a treasure hunt for control of a universe.
The only escape from the misery of the real world, is a virtual-reality simulation called the OASIS. Set in the future, the film features teenager Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan), out on a treasure hunt set ip by creator of the digital world, James Halliday (Mark Rylance) before his death. The winner will become the richest person on Earth and also get control of OASIS.
“There are so many more compelling reasons to escape into the OASIS than exist in real life,” Spielberg tells EW. “A lot of our movie is a comparative study. Which world would they rather spend their lives in — with all the distractions and complexities and perks of the digital world of the OASIS, or with the responsibilities of being a student or a parent living in real life? It’s real life versus virtual life. Which is more compelling?”
Ready Player One opens in theaters on March 30, 2018.
