Sineád O’Connor, the true icon of Ireland’s music scene who found global fame with the song “Nothing Compares 2 U”, has passed away. Tributes poured in for the legendary singer and activist after her family released a statement confirming that she died at the age of 56.

O’Connor’s family announced the tragic news in public in a statement shared with the Irish media, without revealing the cause, date, or place of death: “It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Sinéad. Her family and friends are devastated and have requested privacy at this very difficult time.”

O’Connor’s death comes about a year after her 17-year-old son Shane passed away. She is survived by her three children Jake Reynolds, Roisin Waters, and Yeshua Bonadio.

O’Connor proved she’s a once-in-a-generation talent with her debut album The Lion and the Cobra from 1987, and earned her first Grammy nomination with this LP. She found an even bigger success after releasing her signature song “Nothing Compares 2 U” in 1990, which was nominated for three Grammys, including record of the year.

O’Connor went on to release 10 studio albums and made a name for herself as a vocal activist who never strayed away from standing for what she believed in. She’ll be remembered for her fearless commitment to bringing public attention to important issues and always speaking truth to power.
