Olivia Rodrigo’s comeback single “Vampire” was a long time coming—and it was worth the wait! The singer had a bloody good time while writing this biting new song, and the music video perfectly captures the song’s dark themes without being too literal.

Fans expected Rodrigo to go full Twilight when she announced the name of her single, but she opted for a completely different approach. She worked closely with the director Petra Collins to develop a video that features vampire references, without being “too on the nose”.

The video opens with Rodrigo in an ethereal flower field, but it quickly turns out she’s actually performing at the awards show. After being hit by a falling light, she tries to keep singing while covered in blood but eventually ends up running into the night.

In an official statement on social media, Rodrigo said this song helped me sort through lots of feelings of regret, anger, and heartache and expressed hope it will help her fans deal with bloodsuckers in their life.

“Vampire” marks Rodrigo’s first single in almost two years and it was released as the lead single from Rodrigo’s upcoming album Guts. This album will hit the shelves on September 8, and it saw Rodrigo join forces with producer Dan Nigro, after working on her debut album Sour by each other’s side.
