Haruo Nakajima, the man who first played the beloved monster Godzilla, passed away on Monday aged 88.
Nakajima was underneath the Godzilla suit in 12 movies. In a recent interview, he explained that the original costume used in 1954’s film was made from concrete and weighed up to 220 lbs. In order to prepare for the role, he had studied animals in the Tokyo zoo.
The actor played Godzilla from 1954 to 1972. His cause of death was pneumonia.
