Tom Cruise made an epic comeback as Captain Pete “Maverick” Mitchell in Top Gun: Maverick, and he’ll soon get back into the cockpit! The beloved action superhero is set to return in the third film in the Top Gun franchise, which is in development at Paramount.

Top Gun: Maverick co-writer Ehren Kruger is working on the script for Top Gun 3, while Joseph Kosinski is tapped to return to the director’s chair. Paramount is also hoping that the young stars Miles Teller and Glen Powell would return alongside Cruise, but he’ll first have to sign off on the final version of the script.

Top Gun 3 isn’t the only project keeping Cruise busy. He’s also plotting the eighth Mission: Impossible film at Paramount and is attached to Doug Liman’s untitled space epic. He signed a non-exclusive deal with Warner Bros. just last week, agreeing to develop franchises and original movies for this studio.

Developing the sequel to Top Gun: Maverick is a no-brainer for Paramount, given the film’s commercial and critical success. With $1.496 billion grossed worldwide, this is the highest-grossing of Cruise’s career and the second-highest-grossing film of 2022 behind James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water. It’s also been nominated for six Academy Awards, including best picture.
