Ruby Rose Cast as Batwoman for The CW

Here comes Batwoman!

The CW has found its heroine. Model and actress Ruby Rose has been tapped to play Kate Kane aka Batwoman. The iconic DC Comics character will be introduced in the network’s upcoming crossover event this December, the Arrowverse.

The news was announced Tuesday by the network. A Batwoman series is currently in development, a stand-alone series first as it will be centered on an LGBTQ superhero. This means that Batwoman would be the first gay lead in a live-action superhero series.

Here’s the official logline: “Armed with a passion for social justice and a flair for speaking her mind, Kate Kane soars onto the streets of Gotham as Batwoman, an out lesbian and highly trained street fighter primed to snuff out the failing city’s criminal resurgence. But don’t call her a hero yet. In a city desperate for a savior, Kate must overcome her own demons before embracing the call to be Gotham’s symbol of hope. Based on the characters from DC.”

Rose took to social media to announce the news to her fans writing, “The Bat is out of the bag and I am beyond thrilled and honored. I’m also an emotional wreck.. because this is a childhood dream. This is something I would have died to have seen on TV when I was a young member of the LGBT community who never felt represented on TV and felt alone and different.”

Rose is best known for her role in Orange Is the New Black, and has also starred in Pitch Perfect 3, XXX: The Return of Xander Cage and John Wick: Chapter 2. You can see her next in The Meg.
