]]>Honey Don’t! marks the follow-up to Coen’s upcoming solo directorial debut, road comedy Drive-Away Dolls, and it’s expected to explore the same genre. Coen wrote the script with his wife Tricia Cooke, the veteran editor who worked on several films he co-directed alongside his brother Joel Coen, including The Big Lebowski.
Honey Don’t! will reunite Coen with Margaret Qualley, who also plays the lead role in his upcoming film Drive-Away Dolls, which centers on two friends looking for a fresh start on a road trip to Tallahassee. She’s also attached to Yorgos Lanthimos’ next film Kinds of Kindness, co-starring Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons.
Aubrey Plaza recently starred in the second season of The White Lotus, for which she received her first Emmy nomination. She was also a part of the Scott Pilgrim Takes Off voice cast alongside Chris Evans, who most recently starred in Netflix’s Pain Hustlers. He’ll next be seen in the holiday action comedy Red One alongside Dwayne Johnson.

]]>Kristen Stewart takes on the role of Abby, who’s planning to propose to her girlfriend Harper (Mackenzie Davis) at a Christmas party at her family home. The only catch? Harper still hasn’t come out to her conservative parents, and they think Abby is just her platonic roommate.
The chemistry between Stewart and Davis is the strongest in the early scenes of the movie while the supporting actors do a much better job carrying the rest of it. Schitt’s Creek’s Dan Levy is as hilarious as always as Abby’s best friend, and Parks and Recreation’s Aubrey Plaza does a great job bringing some nuance to the role of Harper’s secret ex-girlfriend.
We’re used to Levy and Plaza doing a great job in each project they appear in, but the real MVP of Happiest Season is the relative newcomer Mary Holland. Surrounded by a cast of established actors, including Alison Brie, Victor Garber, and Mary Steenburgen, she manages to shine the brightest as Harper’s quirky sister Jane, who steals every scene she’s in.
Happiest Season falls into some of the common traps of “meet the parents while harboring a huge secret” trope, but it’s a genuinely enjoyable and charming Hulu original. The relationship between the two leads could’ve been better fleshed-out, but the movie makes up for it with its truly hilarious supporting cast, making this the perfect rom-com to add to your watch list this holiday season.

]]>Plaza is taking on hosting duties from Nick Kroll and John Mulaney, who have been roasting A-list stars at this ceremony for two years straight. Film Independent president Josh Welsh explained it was immediately clear to them she’s the perfect person for the job.
“This year we said, let’s find someone funny, smart, a cinephile, being a great actor wouldn’t hurt, and it would be an added bonus if they’ve previously won a Spirit Award. Then we realized, oh wait, that’s Aubrey Plaza!” explained Welsh.
Plaza rose to prominence as one of the cast members of NBC sitcom Parks and Recreation, and starred in several critically acclaimed indies after the show wrapped up. She won a Spirit Award as a producer of Ingrid Goes West, and also played the lead in this quirky dramedy opposite Elizabeth Olsen.
