After months of anticipation, the British Academy finally unveiled the list of BAFTA nominees, bringing many surprises our way. Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer emerged as the top contender with 13 nods, with Yorgos Lanthimos’ Poor Things right behind with 11.

Oppenheimer and Poor Things are both in the running for the coveted best film award, along with Anatomy of a Fall, The Holdovers, and Killers of the Flower Moon. Despite making it to the same category at many international award shows, Greta Gerwig’s Barbie didn’t make the cut in this field, and it only received five nominations.

Poor Things also received a nod for the best British film, where it will be competing against the likes of All of Us Strangers, Saltburn, Wonka, and The Zone of Interest, which scored an impressive nine nominations.

“Killers of the Flower Moon” will also be among the main contenders at this year’s BAFTAs with nine nominations, despite being snubbed in some of the major categories. Most shockingly, Lily Gladstone and Leonardo DiCaprio didn’t receive nods for their lead performances, and neither did the director Martin Scorsese.

The 2024 BAFTA Awards will return to the Royal Festival Hall in London on February 18, with David Tennant hosting the show for the very first time.

Another BAFTA ceremony is behind us, and masterminds behind The Power of the Dog and Dune had a reason to celebrate at the end of the night. Jane Campion’s wester drama picked up the award for best film, while Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi epic walked away with a total of five awards.

The Power of the Dog was running against Belfast, Dune, Don’t Look Up, and Licorice Pizza in the best film category, but it managed to beat tough competition to pick up this trophy. Campion was named the best director, becoming the third woman to ever collect this award.

Dune came into the ceremony with high expectations, after topping the list of nominees with 11 nods. It managed to win five of these awards—best cinematography, production design, special visual effects, sound, and original score.

The acting categories brought one of the biggest surprises of the night our way, with underdog Joanna Scanlan picking up the award for best actress with After Love. The rest of the winners were easier to predict—Will Smith (King Richard) was named best actor, while Troy Kotsur (CODA) and Ariana DeBose (West Side Story) dominated supporting categories.

The 75th British Academy Film Awards took place on March 13th at the Royal Albert Hall in London, with Rebel Wilson hosting the ceremony.

We’re yet to find out which films will be competing at this year’s BAFTA Awards, but there’s at least one aspect of this ceremony that’s no longer a mystery. Joanna Lumley will return to host this event, for the second time in a row.

The upcoming ceremony will take place at London’s Royal Albert Hall on February 10. Emma Baehr, director of awards at BAFTA, said they’re excited to see Cirque du Soleil delivering a special performance during the ceremony and also announced the host for this year’s BAFTA Awards.

“We’re thrilled that Joanna has agreed to return as our host for a second year, she was fantastic and we’re looking forward to the ceremony with her once again at the helm,” said Baehr.

Joanna Lumley took over the hosting duties from Stephen Fry, who decided to “retire” after 12 years at the helm. Longtime host felt it’s finally time to let someone else have the privilege of enjoying all ups and downs of being in charge of this ceremony.

“Over the last two decades I have especially loved watching the emergence of new young film talent behind and in front of the camera. But after so long a time I felt it only right to stand down and let others take the BAFTAs on to new heights and greater glories,” explained Fry after leaving the post.

The Favourite was one of the front-runners since the very start of the awards season and it, once again lived, up to its reputation. This satirical look at Queen Anne’s reign received a total of 12 nods at the upcoming BAFTA Film Awards.

The Favourite will be competing in all the major categories, including best film, best British film, and best director. BlacKkKlansman and Green Book are also in the running for the biggest award of the night.
