]]>Colombia’s latest Oscar-bid took home the $40,000 Knight Marimbas Award (the top grand jury prize). The epic that traces the origins of the Colombian narcotics trade was directed by Cristina Gallego and Ciro Guerra.
The Knight Marimbas Award is sponsored by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, and is given to the film “that best exemplifies richness and resonance for cinema’s future, named for the marimba, a variation of the xylophone that produces a deeper, richer and more resonant tone,” according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Additional wins include the Audience Award for best feature for Screwball, a documentary about a Major League Baseball doping scandal and Faren Humes’ Liberty and Jayme Gershen’s Six Degrees of Immigration, which tied for best short.
