Green Book had strong competition in Roma, especially after Netflix spent millions on campaigning in hopes that this Mexican drama will bring them their first Oscar.
Alfonso Cuarón eventually won three awards for this film, but the best picture award wasn’t one of them. Green Book came out victorious in this category, but also won additional two awards – best original screenplay and best supporting actor (Mahershala Ali).
The cast and crew of Bohemian Rhapsody also had a lot to celebrate as the film topped the list of winners with a total of four awards. The Academy’s love for the Freddie Mercury was also shown by the invitation sent

Also nominated for the night’s biggest honors are A Star Is Born, Green Book, Roma, BlacKkKlansman, The Favourite, Bohemian Rhapsody and Vice.
But this year’s list also includes some major snubs, notably A Star Is Born director Bradley Cooper who was not nominated for Best Director. The remake of the classic film earned eight nominations in total including Best Picture and acting noms for both Cooper and Lady Gaga.
Another surprising snub is Emily Blunt who did not receive a nomination for Best Actress for her portrayal of everyone’s favorite nanny Mary Poppins. The film earned a total of four nods including Best Original Song for “The Place Where Lost Things Go.”
Tying for most nominations of the year with a whopping ten nods each are The Favourite and Roma.

]]>The Freddie Mercury biopic was the dark horse in the race for best drama film, but it ended up beating obvious favorites like A Star Is Born. Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga were expected to win awards for their performances in this movie, but that never happened since Rami Malek and Glenn Close bested them in their respective categories.
The comedy categories were easier to predict, and Green Book took home to the main award of the night, while Christian Bale (Vice) and Olivia Colman (The Favourite) won the acting categories
When it comes to TV, the Golden Globe voters bid farewell to The Americans by awarding the last season of this show with a shiny trophy for best drama. The Kominsky Method won big in comedy categories, while American Crime Story proved to be the best miniseries of the year.

]]>Rami Malek has been chosen as the recipient of the honor for this year’s 30th Palm Springs International Film Festival for his performance as Queen’s frontman in the biopic film, Bohemian Rhapsody.
“In the film Bohemian Rhapsody, Rami Malek fully brings to life and embodies musical legend Freddie Mercury, in what is truly an outstanding performance for this fine actor,” said festival Chairman Harold Matzner. “For his portrayal that is garnering much critical acclaim, it is our honor to present the 2018 Breakthrough Performance Award to Rami Malek.”
Malek joins past recipients of the award including Mahershala Ali, Mary J. Blige, Marion Cotillard, Jennifer Hudson, Felicity Huffman, Brie Larson, Lupita Nyong’o, David Oyelowo, Rosamund Pike and Jeremy Renner.

]]>The dynamite biopic about the legendary rock band Queen has rocked its audience to the tune of an estimated $50 million opening weekend across 4,000 theaters in the US and Canada. Bohemian Rhapsody will score the second biggest opening for a music biopic ever, behind 2015’s Straight Outta Compton ($60.2 million).
According to Entertainment Weekly, the film was projected to debut in the $35 million to $40 million range. But it definitely exceeded expectations, dethroning the also hugely successful Halloween as the No. 1 film in North America.
Starring as the band’s frontman Freddie Mercury is Rami Malek. While critical reviews are mixed, everyone agrees that Malek’s portrayal of Mercury is spot on. The film has received a 95% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
See the weekend’s box office figures below:
1. Bohemian Rhapsody — $50 million
2. The Nutcracker and the Four Realms — $20 million
3. Nobody’s Fool — $14 million
4. A Star Is Born — $11.1 million
5. Halloween — $11 million
6. Venom — $7.9 million
7. Smallfoot — $3.8 million
8. Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween — $3.7 million
9. Hunter Killer — $3.5 million
10. The Hate U Give — $3.4 million

]]>Bohemian Rhapsody stars Rami Malek as Queen’s frontman Freddie Mercury and from the looks of it, Malek’s portrayal is absolutely spot on. The sneak peek of the film that chronicles the band’s path to fame showed just how much Malek immersed himself in the role, completely transforming into Mercury, nailing the look as well as the moves.
The project has been long time in the making and Malek wasn’t first pick for the role. It was Sacha Baron Cohen that was originally cast for the leading role, however, exited the production due “creative differences.”
“Basically, they wanted to make a movie about the band and I wanted to make it a little more about Freddie,” Cohen told ET in 2013.
The production suffered another setback when original director Bryan Singer dropped out due to “unexpected unavailability” and replaced by Dexter Fletcher in December 2017.
Bohemian Rhapsody is scheduled to hit theaters October 24 in the UK and November 2 in the US

]]>The network announced the news Wednesday, two day after Bryan Singer’s firing. Production will resume next week with Fletcher hired to take over as director of the Queen biopic.
Fletcher has both acting and directing credits which include Kick-ass, Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Eddie the Eagle, Sunshine on Leith, and Wild Bill respectively.
Production on the film was temporarily put on hold due to Singer’s “unexpected unavailability.” However, the absence which resulted in a production shutdown, days later led to Singer’s termination. The ousted director then issued a statement saying that his termination was the result of the production “unwilling to accommodate” his return to the US to tend to a sick family member, and not due to on-set disputed with Rami Malek who star’s as Freddie Mercury.
“Rumors that my unexpected departure from the film was sparked by a dispute I had with Rami Malek are not true,” he writes. “While, at times, we did have creative differences on set, Rami and I successfully put those differences behind us and continued to work on the film together until just prior to Thanksgiving.”
Bohemian Rhapsody is scheduled for release on Christmas Day 2018.

]]>The studio behind the film, Twentieth Century Fox, released a statement on Friday saying: “Twentieth Century Fox Film has temporarily halted production on Bohemian Rhapsody due to the unexpected unavailability of Bryan Singer.”
The BBC was the first to report that it was illness that forces the director to stop working on the Freddie Mercury film which will tell the story of the late Queen frontman’s life. The director’s representative said it was “a personal health matter concerning Bryan and his family.”
Filming is taking place in the UK with Rami Malek starring as Freddie Mercury. Singer’s past directing credits include The Usual Suspects, four X-Men movies and Superman Returns.
Despite this delay, Bohemian Rhapsody is still scheduled for its original release date on December 25, 2018.

]]>This won’t be Myers first association with Queen. The actor co-wrote the SNL movie Wayne’s World, which famously opened with his as Wayne Campbell and Garth Algar (Dana Garvey) rocking out to “Bohemian Rhapsody” in their car.
Bohemian Rhapsody, directed by Bryan Singer (the X-Men movies, The Usual Suspects and Superman Returns) will not be a traditional biopic according to the director. “It won’t just be the dark Freddie story, but that being said, that also will be honored,” Singer told EW, “It’s about collaboration. It’s a celebration.” The film will chronicle the band Queen from 1970, when Mercury teamed with Brian May and Roger Taylor, until the band’s performance at Live Aid in 1985, six years before the singer died of complications from AIDS.
Bohemian Rhapsody opens in theaters on December 25, 2018.
