After six seasons of gritty, grueling drama, Bojack Horseman has finally come to its bitter conclusion. What started out as a satirical comedy about a depressed washed-up celebrity evolved into something far more illuminating and far more important.

One of the recurring themes in the show is celebrities getting away with terrible behavior because they are famous. Vance Waggoner, a character who behaves atrociously is continuously able to revive his career by publically apologizing. Fittingly, he returns in season 6 as Bojack’s sponsor and they bond over being canceled. Elsewhere in the season, Margo Martindale is finally put on trial for murder, only to be let off the hook when she is offered a part in a movie. And finally, Bojack serves a short-term prison sentence with a movie offer waiting for him when he leaves. As Princess Carolyn reminds him, the best and worst thing about Hollywood is that it has a short memory.

By the end of season six, it feels like Bojack’s journey is already over. The anti-hero we have been reluctantly routing for loses everything and degenerates back into a cycle of addiction and self-loathing. He may be serving his time in prison but the people he loves will not be waiting for him on the outside. Princess Carolyn has found love, Dianne has learned it’s not her job to fix Bojack, and Hollyhock presumably wants nothing to do with him. It’s the ending Bojack deserves.

More importantly, however, Princess Carolyn and Dianne get the ending they deserve too. In “Good Damage”, Dianne navigates life on anti-depressants and has to face the fact that the book she has always wanted to write is not something she actually wants to write. Instead of forcing herself, she realizes that she can write a fun teenage detective story if she wants to and that’s ok. The damage that she has been desperately trying to make into something beautiful is a part of her and she can harness what she has learned in whatever she writes. It’s a triumphant and powerful moment.

Ultimately then, the best thing about season six of Bojack Horseman is that it isn’t entirely about Bojack. It is just as much about the people who have suffered at his hand. More than this, it is a profound social commentary on the toxicity of celebrity culture. And that is why Bojack Horseman will always be our favorite show about a depressed cartoon horse(man).

The first part of the Bojack Horseman series finale has landed on Netflix and once again, the show proves itself to be the best cartoon about a depressed horse on Netflix.

The final season begins with Bojack in rehab. After seasons of running away from his problems and using alcohol to forget about them, Bojack finally seeks the help he desperately needs. He writes letters to Dianne, informing her of his progress. Even if his counselor is full of useless aphorisms, Bojack successfully commits to sobriety. For the first time ever on the show, we see some real character development. In spite of the comical slipups that occur along the way, the cycle of doing appalling things and self-deprecation seems to be weaning.

Meanwhile, Princess Carolyn is struggling to balance her work life with her new baby. Fittingly, her baby is a porcupine who pricks her every time she pics him up. For a while, it seems that once again, Princess Carolyn is putting her work-life before her personal life. By the end of the season, however, she too shows signs of genuine character development.

As always, the season is filled with witty animal puns and seeded irony. The show continues to heavily criticize the toxicity of Hollywood culture and in the same breath, the show turns this painful criticism in on itself. It achieves this in a way that is both devastating and brilliantly funny.

By the end of the season, Bojack seems to be transformed into a new horse. He faces up to his problems, takes responsibility for his decisions and last but not least, he gets a haircut. He apologizes to Princess Carolyn for all the liberties he has taken; he gives Dianne some helpful advice and finally, he gives Mr. Peanutbutter the crossover episode he has always wanted.

Just as we start to feel happy for Bojack, we are reminded in the cruellest way that he is not, for lack of a better word, a good person. Two new characters are introduced to the storyline as reporters looking to find out the cause of Sarah Lynn’s tragic death. We already know, of course, who is responsible. In addition, the actress Gina Cazador is a damaged woman after the trauma she endured when Bojack strangled her and at the end of the episode, we are reminded of the time Bojack got two teens drunk and left them at the hospital. This time, however, we hear the story from the victim’s point of view.

Hollyhock’s expression right before she finds out that the culprit of the story is Bojack is exactly how we felt watching the season finale. For a second there, we felt proud of Bojack for overcoming his issues and taking steps to become a better man. Any sympathy we extended to the character gets torn away as we are reminded firmly that he had done terrible things. He may be accepting responsibility for the things he has done, but the law and the public still need to hold him accountable regardless of his celebrity status. And that double-sided sword of an ending is exactly what makes Bojack Horseman so devastatingly brilliant.

It seems BoJack Horseman isn’t done horsin’ around on Netflix for at least one more year! The hit animated series has been renewed by the popular streaming service and will soon be getting a sixth season.

We’ve been following BoJack’s adventures since 2014, when this show started streaming on Netflix. It tells the story of self-loathing, washed-up 1990s sitcom star who’s trying to stay relevant while dealing with his raging alcoholism and personal struggles.

The news of the renewal comes a little over a month after Season 5 premiered on the streaming service and received universal acclaim.

A cancellation of BoJack Horseman is nowhere in sight and its creator Raphael Bob-Waksberg intends to keep on making it as long as there’s a story to tell. “Life happens and continues to change, and stories pulse and recede, so I do not have a firm ending in mind. I have had different ideas of possible ways we could leave these characters, but that evolves as the show evolves,” explained Bob-Waksberg.

By television standards, it is still up there but by Bojack Horseman standards, it could possibly be seen as more of the same. But then again, what else could we expect?

When it’s good, it’s very very good and when it’s bad, well, it’s still above average. Season 5 brings our favorite characters entirely new challenges that still revolve around their ever-present, inevitable circular character flaws.

One one hand, we see Princess Carolyn searching for a baby to adopt and we get to learn a little bit more about her backstory. Touching moments are of course interrupted by her ringing phone and the reminder that balancing her incredibly demanding career with her persistently declining personal life is likely impossible. Still, after Season 4’s constant delivery of tragic events thrown in Princess Carolyn’s direction, it’s refreshing to see her pursue her dreams of motherhood and reveal her softer, empathetic side again.

On the other hand, Dianne and Mr. Peanutbutter are separately coming to terms with their divorce. For Mr. Peanutbutter, throwing himself into a new relationship with a fun, young pooch is the simple solution for recovering from heartbreak. For Dianne, however, the heartbreak hits harder and she finds herself back in her first apartment and heading to Vietnam in a hopeless attempt to rediscover herself. Her story is remarkably believable, especially considering she is a cartoon woman mourning her relationship with a golden retriever. Her new ‘I’m over you and a new woman’ haircut was a brilliant touch too.

As for Bojack, if it wasn’t made clear in previous seasons, it’s become clearer than ever that Bojack is broken, seemingly beyond repair. His new show ‘Philbert’ explores a dark protagonist who bears so many resemblances to Bojack that his on-set apartment is almost identical to his real-life apartment. The clever meta-writing to highlight the ways Bojack as himself and Bojack as Philbert intertwine becomes increasingly dark as our antihero spirals further into addiction and psychosis.

Highlights of the season include its treatment of the #MeToo movement. It artfully takes the issue seriously through its exploration of toxic masculinity and the silenced female voice while also being darkly comical. Jokes are made at everyone’s expense but at the crux of the season finale and the ‘Bojack the Feminist’ episode is a highly nuanced social commentary which is both humorously satirical and dead earnest at once.

The season was perhaps not as firing as it could be on all available cylinders. The episode ‘Free Churro’, where Bojack delivers a mess of a eulogy at his late mother’s funeral is powerful but also drags on far too long. At times, it feels tiring watching Bojack make the same mistakes, over and over again but then again, perhaps it would feel like a betrayal if he grew as a horseman.

Overall, Season 5 succeeds in bringing new storylines and providing us with new character developments while also retaining the frustrating hopelessness of each narcissistic character. The show continues to remain true to itself, providing us with revitalizing satire alongside the odd pitifully brilliant animal gag.

The Season 5 trailer for Bojack Horesman has finally dropped and we’ve never been more buzzed for a show which makes us so depressed.

The short trailer shows that Hollyhock will be back which is great for us but unfortunate for her as she will probably end up being roped into Bojack’s mess. Bojack, our mid-life crisis protagonist is now starring in the new show, ‘Philbert,’ and continues to battle his recurring demons.

“You say you want to get better and you don’t know how”, Dianne declares three times throughout the teaser. There’s more drinking, more depression and it’s looking less and less likely that Bojack will ever get his happy ending but hey, that’s Hollywood.

The upshot of the trailer is that it suggests that Bojack’s problems this season will be more adventurous and less existential. He seems to be caught up with some crime related happenings and the question that plagues him of whether he is a bad person might become a little more black and white and less of a mopey grey area.

We have lots of questions we want answered in the new season. Will Mr Peanut Butter and Dianne make amends? Will Princess Caroline find love? What is Todd up to?

The good news is we only have to wait until September 14.

And by the way Dianne, we love the new hair.
