The 26-year-old singer has announced that he is engaged to childhood friend Cherry Seaborn. The singer-songwriter took to social media Saturday to make the exciting announcement, posting the news on his Instagram account. Sheeran captioned a sweet snap of himself and Seaborn “Got myself a fiancée just before the new year.”

Keeping their relationship on the down low at first, they were first linked romantically on their one year anniversary when fellow singer Taylor Swift ousted them by sharing her best wishes to them on Instagram.

Sheeran and Seaborn have been dating for almost three years, but actually they go way back. The two met at school in Framlington, Suffolk where they grew up. Sheeran told PEOPLE in March, “I’ve known Cherry since I was 11. She worked on Wall Street in New York, and I had like six shows. It was around then, and we reconnected. I went on tour again, and then I went to Taylor’s 4th of July party. I was texting [Seaborn], and she was like, ‘I’m in Rhode Island at a 4th of July party,’ and I was like, ‘So am I.’ I kinda said to Taylor, ‘Can I invite one of my old schoolmates?’ The rest is history.”

In 2016 Sheeran took a year out of the spotlight before recording his hit album Divide.

“…All the pitfalls that people read about, I just found myself slipping into all of them,” the singer said on an episode of The Jonathan Ross Show late last year. “Mostly, like, substance abuse. I didn’t really notice it was happening. It just started gradually happening…”

Luckily Sheeran had Seaborn at his side, who helped his take a year to really make a change, “I think that was a real help grounding me,” he said of them moving in together.

During an interview on Ellen DeGeneres’ YouTube series, Ellen’s Show Me More Show, posted on Friday,the host expressed her frustration and told Sheeran she is “outraged” he was not nominated for Song of the Year or Album of the Year.

The British singer explained, “My outlook on it is like, some years you have your year and some years you don’t have your year, and maybe this year wasn’t my year.”

He won two Grammys in 2016 for Song of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance for his single “Thinking Out Loud.”

DeGeneres said the song “Shape of You,” did not leave her head.

“But that’s the point, that’s where you win,” Sheeran replied. “That’s where the validation comes from, where you actually see people—genuine people—enjoying the songs. I’d rather have, like, a lifetime of people coming up to me and saying, like, ‘This song affects me in this way, in a positive way,’ and like, ‘This song is my wedding song,’ ‘This song was my first kiss,’ than anything else. I think that’s where the validation comes.”

“I did it and the song came out so long ago,” Sheeran shared. “And I was like, ‘I want to do it as a single,’ and then I thought of a way of relaunching it and I was like, ‘Oh, I love Beyoncé. Shall I ask Beyoncé? And in my head, I was like, ‘She’s gonna say no.’ And then I was like, ‘Well, you might as well ask.’ And she said, ‘Yeah,’ so here we are.”
